Commodores Hard shingle removal
A great achievement by Medway Watersports Trust. A message from Pete Snowden.
I am pleased to say that Norse kindly helped out this morning and shifted a
significant amount of shingle from the upper levels of Commodore’s Hard,
which has allowed my team to crack on and clear the remaining shingles and
sweep the causeway. This is a real example of a quick win, and something
that we should celebrate as part of the new river strategy.
We also swept the footpath running behind the lido, so pushchairs and
wheelchair users can now access that space.
This is a great start, so let’s keep the momentum up over the following
weeks before the better weather arrives. We need to clear out the shingle
from the bays between the grounds and love it down the waterline and into
the foreshore mud to stabilise that area.
By doing this it will protect the causeway from the shingle build up,
preserve the old historic sea defences that are currently poking out of the
mud, and improve the waterfront area by making the beach more accessible for
everyone.
This work will need a tracked machine to get over the shingle but my team
are also standing by willing and able to help with shovels and wheelbarrows.
Below are some before and after photos. I think it looks 100% better already
and we had so many comments from passers by today about the improvement.
Let’s keep the momentum up. A big win for the community, at very little cost
to the public purse.
