Congratulations to Medway Watersports Centre

Local Watersports charity receives special award.

Medway Watersports Trust, based at The Strand in Gillingham, were recently recognised at the highest level for their services to the local community.

The charity was named as one of the 231 charities across the UK, and 7 in Kent, that have received the Kings Award for Voluntary Service. Equivalent to a MBE for the charity it recognises the value of the services that they offer to the community.

There is no one size fits all approach when it comes to KAVS Awardees, but here are 3 key characteristics that the National Committee were looking for:

  1. Groups that are truly outstanding and making a big difference to their local community.
  2. Groups where volunteers, rather than paid staff, are in the driving seat.
  3. Groups that have the highest standards in everything they do.

Pete Snowdon, Centre Principal said “I am absolutely delighted that MWT has received this fantastic recognition for all of the hard work that our volunteers past and present have completed.

With over 30 regular volunteers across paddle sports, sailing and maintenance activities as well as IT and back office support, the whole team is focused on providing the absolute best experience on the water for the hundreds of children, youths and adults that come through our doors every year.

With one of the newest paddlesports and sailing fleets on the river, we hope that this news will encourage even more people to come along to one of our sessions in 2026 and experience the joy that being afloat on the river brings”
