If you know of anyone who loves boats, being close to water, care for the river environment and enjoy working outside then this is a new and rare opportunity for them to be a part of maintaining and improving the River Medway infrastructure owned and managed by Medway Council.
The Council is seeking to recruit a Marine Assets Technical Support Officer to assist the Marine Assets Manager within the Facilities Management and Capital Projects Team at Medway Council
Supported by the Marine Assets Manager, the role will be to:
- Support day-to-day management and operational oversight of the Council’s marine assets.
- Coordinate maintenance works for Sun Pier, Rochester Pier, Gillingham Pier (a draw dock) and flood defences at Rochester Riverside and Strood Riverside
- Make regular inspections of marine assets within the Facilities Management and Capital Projects Team portfolio.
- Act as a point of contact for berth holders, tenants, visiting vessels, contractors, river tour operators and general enquiries related to council marine assets.
- Ensure piers are safe, well-maintained, and welcoming for both community use and maritime operations.
- Liaise with internal departments, external maritime agencies and visiting ships to uphold safety, compliance, and service standards.
- Manage administration of berth holder income and berth allocations.
- Raise maintenance work orders.
- Attend site visits to monitoring contracts.
- Attend site visits with the councils Enforcement Team for the issuing of warning letters and notices to quit on unauthorised vessels moored at council assets.
This role covers a wide range of river-related work and may involve challenging situations with vessel owners. It is desirable for applicants to have some experience of dealing with challenging behaviour and knowledge of how to resolve conflict.
The post holder will also assist with projects to improve river access and estuarine biodiversity such as salt marsh restoration, sea grass meadow planting and other natural flood defences.
