MSBA Medway Council River Strategy Presentation

Tuesday evening saw over 60 people attend a presentation, at Medway Yacht Club, by Adam Taylor, Marine Asset Manager and Rak Dass, Strategic Project Manager from Medway Council on the Medway River Strategy that was approved by the Council on the 10th February 2026

The strategy covers a number of key themes including;

How to grow the River Medway’s acceptance and standing as a harbour for historic vessels, commercial vessels and leisure activities including fishing, swimming, walking, running, canoeing, sailing and motor boating.

How to reduce the level of pollutants discharged into the river to enhance the water quality

How to grow the natural habitat to safe guard species and grow the salt marshes to act as flood defences.

How to encourage local residents and the younger members of society to get out and get involved with activities on the river.

How to encourage tourists to arrive by water and visit the rich historic tourism attractions and restaurants and shops to help grow the local economy.

How to encourage planners and developers to stop thinking that they can build up to the edge of the river and build on the vital infrastructure required to keep the river and the activities on it operational

Whilst it is not going to be an easy journey there was a real sense of enthusiasm and determination to make it happen from representatives from local clubs, stakeholders, government agencies and businesses that rely on the river and the surrounding land to grow there business and to support peoples mental wellbeing.

Further meetings and workshops we will be held over the coming weeks as well as the recruitment of additional staff within the council to help deliver the strategy.

Please follow the updates on the MSBA Facebook page and website. Please contact the MSBA via its website if you would like to get involved with any of the project areas.
