CA Winter Warmer talk: Roy Brooks, Scotline, Thurs 14 Feb 2019

Roy Brooks is a Director of Scotline Ltd, which is located on the Medway City Estate. Scotline owns 8 vessels ranging between 3,300 and 4,500 tons DWAT with 2 new vessels of 4,750 tons DWAT on order and owners of 2 terminals at Rochester covering 28 acres.

Scotline started shipping logs in the early 1980s from Inverness to Bremen [Germany] and Varberg [Sweden], followed shortly afterwards by regular cargoes of package timber from Varberg to UK and Irish Ports. The company has grown since its humble beginnings and is now the biggest timber carrier from the Baltic States and Sweden to the UK.  Roy will give a brief outline of the Company history and modern shipbuilding methods.

Lena Reekie

We are sad to announce the death from cancer of Lena Reekie, who founded the Faversham Nautical Festival and was the match secretary of the Kentish Sail Association for over 40 years.

Dick Durham writes, “I know it’s frowned upon these days to describe a person by their physical appearance, but if you were describing Lena Reekie to an alien you would say: ‘She’s slim, blonde and Swedish.’ Had the alien then been blessed with the good fortune to be invited to her birthday bash last August, as I was, he would have bought the wrong greetings card: one which read: ‘Have a Happy 60th Birthday.’ That she was 80 surprised Lena as much as everyone else. ‘I know,’ she said, ‘I know,’ in her husky voice, when I protested, genuinely, that this could not be so. If I can get halfway near to approaching my own demise with the grace, good humour and happiness that Lena displayed, I will die a happy man. RIP Lena

Rochester Pier: electrics

Adam Taylor of Medway Council tells us that he is sorting out Rochester Pier’s electrics. Part of this involves inspecting the underside of the pier. Adam asks if there is someone with a small enough boat to help two contractors to survey underneath the pier. If any volunteers could contact Adam directly he’ll organise a time and date.

UPDATE 14.1.2019: work starts today on Rochester Pier electrics which will take up to 2 weeks to fix, in the meantime the pier remains closed including the upper section which has been open to the public. Hopefully we’ll find the fault and get it fixed once and for all.

CA Winter Warmer: Des Crampton, trip to Svalbard, 10 Jan 2019

Des Crampton took his Ramsgate-based Cantilena of London on a 4,500 mile round trip to the Svalbard archipelago in the summer of 2014. Des will introduce his boat and her equipment and give some insight into the detailed planning necessary to accomplish an expedition into icy high latitudes. Using photographs and charts he will illustrate  the  highs  and  lows  of  a  journey beyond the  North and Norwegian Seas and across the Barents Sea to such a remote and special place.
