RYA Club Development Workshops, Jan 2022

Following the recent regional Affiliated Club Conferences, in January the RYA will be running a series of online club development workshops to cover the topics that conference delegates said are most important.  These free workshops are a repeat of the workshops presented at the conferences so are ideal if you were a delegate and now want to revisit the content, as well as for those who were unable to make their live regional event.  Each workshop will leave you with the latest information and ideas to create or update your plans and find out what support is available from the RYA.

  • 10th January – 8-9 pm – How can you plan to retain more members?
  • 17th January – 8-9 pm – How can you plan to recruit and retain more volunteers?
  • 24th January – 8-9 pm – How can you plan to develop or replace your facility?
  • 31st January – 8-9 pm – What are the governance and legal challenges that your club is facing?

If you register for the workshop you will be able to view a recording if you cannot make the live session.  These are open to representatives from RYA Affiliated Clubs so do share the details with others involved with running your club.

CA Kent Section

Clifford Mickleburgh has handed over running of the Kent Section of the Cruising Association to Sue and David Long, who many of us have met at the popular Winter Warmer talks. They will be using the CA system for newsletters and Eventbrite for bookings for face to face meetings. This year’s Winter Warmer talks will be held as Zoom webinars to give some certainty. The CA Zoom licence allows up to 1,000 participants so numbers shouldn’t be a problem.

They are planning to resume face to face meetings when it is safe and financially viable to do so. Anyone who wishes to receive the programme flyer and newsletters and is not a CA member can contact Sue and David at kent@theca.org.uk to be registered as prospective CA members. They will need to agree to their name being on the CA list under GDPR regulations. The CA will contact them annually to check they are still happy to remain on the list. This will allow them to be invited to the face to face meetings when they resume.

Find out how rowing the Atlantic with your mother has led to inspiring mothers-to-be to stay active! Join Sally Kettle as she shares the ups and downs of rowing the Atlantic Ocean twice from East to West, once with her mother! Sally tells of rough seas, wild storms, harsh living and encounters with marine wildlife, including sharks. Find out how six months at sea in a boat the size of the average bathroom affects the body and, perhaps more importantly, the mind. Sally has raised £500,000 for charitable causes. She is an Ambassador for Girlguiding, and Trustee at the London Sports Trust. She has also served on humanitarian aid missions. During lockdown in 2020 Sally set up The Active Pregnancy Foundation with aims to support women to stay active throughout pregnancy and beyond, by providing expertise & advice, changing culture & challenging policy. She has delivered hundreds of talks around the world, to corporates, community groups and schools. Her ideas have been developed into workshop and training options, commentary, and thought leadership. Recently her ideas found a global audience via the missions of listeners to Radio 4. Sally’s FourThought talk, “Does Hope Help?” expounded her hard won personal philosophy of action overcoming procrastination. CA talk: Thanet and Kentish Flats Wind Farms, Thu 11 March, 7pm

The Cruising Association Kent Section’s popular “winter warmer” talks, organised by Clifford Mickleburgh, have not stopped for Covid. All of us, CA member or not, can enjoy them online.

A team from Vattenfall Wind Power Limited will talk about the Thanet and Kentish Flats Wind Farms, how the wind farms are operated and maintained, and the role of the marine co-ordinator.  The talk will also explore green hydrogen, the fuel of the future, and its co-location with wind farms.

Melanie Rogers is the Local Vattenfall Liaison Officer for the Kent region. Throughout the year, she leads the local outreach and engagement programme. She is also a regular speaker to local groups and organisations to give them the opportunity to learn more about renewable energy and their local projects.

Powering UK homes Since the first Kent wind farm – Kentish Flats – was built a decade ago, offshore wind has become an affordable, reliable and vital part of the UK energy system. By 2030, 30GW of offshore wind is expected to be installed in the UK. Vattenfall could power more than 4 million UK homes.
