The MSBA has purchased a life-sized inflatable doll for use of our members. He’s called B-OB (or just Bob for short); you fill him with water and chuck him over the side to practise your person overboard drill. As water has a similar density to a human body, this is far more realistic than the bucket-and-fender that you have may have used for MOB training. It’s surprisingly hard to get Bob, or a real person, back onto your boat so take this opportunity to try out the recovery techniques that you may have to rely on for real one day. Some of the ones you read in magazines just don’t work!
Bob is in the custody of Mark Evans, the Harbour Controller at Queenborough. If your club would like to run a practice session, email Mark at operations(at)queenborough-harbour.co.uk to arrange a mutually convenient collection.
The course is being held on 1 and 2 July at Medway Yacht Club. Cost is £80. Candidates need to be experienced racers. It is a great way to give back something to your club and to help ensure that racing is carried out to the best of abilities.
The Regional Seminar was previously known as the Regional Race Officer (RRO) Course is being run by RYA Race Management Committee approved Instructors.
Preparation for the seminar includes being familiar with the RYA Race Management Guide (available using the link below). At the end of the Seminar, a 50 question multi-choice exam is set with a 70% pass mark. A pass in this exam gives the candidate, as long as they are an RYA member, an automatic Club Race Officer Plus (CRO+) qualification and certificate. This exam pass is one of the requirements for the RRO qualification.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE, Chris Simon, RYA National Judge, Umpire & Race Officer, will be pleased to give a talk to sailing clubs about the racing rules and recent changes.
The famous tall ship, TS Royalist, will be coming to Queenborough Harbour on Tuesday 11 April at approximately 4.00pm. This will be their second visit. Well worth coming to have a look. The new sail training vessel entered service with The Marine Society and Sea Cadets in 2015.
And, just arrived today is Aphrodite, (pictured left) looking magnificent.
A fleet of Tall Ships will be leaving Greenwich on Sunday. The fleet then sails a clockwise Atlantic route with Portugal the next stop on the way to Quebec.
Our three local MPs show us how it should be done today at the Medway Watersports Trust Open Day: (left to right) Kelly Tolhurst, Tracey Crouch and Rehman Chishti. Kelly is Patron of the MSBA and Tracey is Sports Minister. Tracey unveiled a new mural by Sharmaine Kwan. To the left you can see the parlous state of Medway’s only public slipway, known as Commodore’s Hard. The MSBA is campaigning for better public acess to the river.
If you have, or intend to use either a fixed VHF radio on a boat, or even a handheld one, then you must have a licence to use them. The course will include tuition, assessment and submission for the successful applicants’ licence at no extra cost. The 2017 cost for the study packs which the RYA charges to its training centres is not yet known but the total cost to participants is expected to be around £140.
For more information please email Barry Gardiner bgard(at)clara.net as soon as possible.

From time to time we get enquiries from members of the public for training courses. Therefore, we have decided to have a page on the website with a directory of the courses our members are able to offer. There is no charge for this.
If you wish to be included in this directory could you please send Tony (webmaster@ msba.org.uk ) details of any courses you can offer (not necessarily RYA courses), whether certificated or general interest, and contact details for your training principal.
The Training Directory is accessed from the Training menu item above.
